Get Lost

And then found. I may have talked about this before, but I find it fun, so I'll go over it again. Geocaching.com. What is that, you say? It's where you can learn all about Geocaching. What is geocaching? IT's a high tech treasure hunt using GPS technology to find hidden caches all over the world. There are 218706 active caches in 219 countries. There are several thousand in Utah alone. For some, you don't even need a GPS device. But for most, that's about all you need. YOu can get a decent GPS for under $150. It's a lot more fun than it sounds. You should try it. If you don't have a GPS device and want to check this out, (and you know me) let me know. I'll take you with me on a few caches.

  • How many of these have you done? Where did they take you and what did you find?
    Inquiring minds want to know.

  • Well, I've added a new icon on the right hand side of the blog, near the bottom. It has my current stats. I have low numbers now because this is my second Geocaching account. I lost the email account for the first.

Anyway, they are all over the city and the country. I've found hidden parks and undeveloped areas all over that I never would have guessed were there. I've hit a few up the canyons and a few out of state. As for the caches, my joy is the find not the stuff you find. But many are filled with small items, toys, trinkets. You are supposed to leave an item for each item you take, sign the log and then put it back just as you found it so others can make the find, too.

We should hit a few together. We'll grab a hot beverage and find some urban caches.

  • It's like high-tech money-digging (only you use a GPS device instead of mystical seer stone!)

  • Ah the memmories of searching for the elusive Simpsons cache in Big Cottonwood Canyon. I want to try searching for the one we couldn't find at Dounut Falls again, maybe this spring or early summer.

  • I'll have to look, but I think they may have closed down those caches. There was the person that died at the falls this past summer and the private property owners closed access across thier land to get to the falls. But there are plenty more out there.

  • Yes, I can see that it is very addicting. I've started toting my GPS and palm (with cache info) everywhere. When I don't have it, I always wonder if there are any caches nearby.
